A native of Pensacola, Florida, Ashley Wiltshire Spotswood has lived in Birmingham since 1978 after receiving a BA with an emphasis on painting from the University of Alabama. The show at Amanda Schedler Fine Art will feature her new work - atmospheric landscapes painted in oil on canvas and wood panel. In their deeply felt rendering of place, her painting follows in the tradition of the great Romantic landscape artists, such as J.M.W. Turner and Caspar David Friedrich, and the Aesthetic painter James McNeill Whistler.

Spotswood displays an unusual sensitivity to light in her work. She records not just the time of day and the weather conditions of a place, but also the effect that the type of trees and vegetation has on that light. Her paintings are like memories of specific moments in beloved places, such as the backyard of her home in Birmingham. Each is a record of the place and the mood of the moment. She explores all the colors found in a landscape, beyond the browns and greens. Orange, yellow, gray and blue appear with dramatic freshness of feeling.

Spotswood has studied with several noted artists, including Greg Kreutz, Kevin MacPherson, Randall Sexton, Marc Chatov and Tom Browning. She is a member of the Oil Painters of America. Her work has been featured in solo and group shows in Nashville, Atlanta, New Orleans and Birmingham. Her work is found in numerous private collections around the country and in several corporate collections, such as Energen and Alabama Gas.
