GALLERY SPECIAL 10-20% DISCOUNTS through DEC. 24th.Christmas Exhibition and Sale of Original Natural History Engravings, Etchings, Aquatints and Lithographs from the foremost men and women of 17th, 18th and 19th Natural History Science from J. Gilbert Johnston's Antique Nature Prints. This Sale features original aquatints from Audubon's monumental Double Elephant Folio work "The Birds of America" 1826-1838, as well as original lithographs from his small Octavo edition of the "Birds" in the 1840s. Also included are Audubon's acclaimed Folio lithographs on American mammals, "The Vivaparous Quadrupeds of North America" 1845-1848. They are large and striking hand-colored animal portraits. Other Bird artists include: John Gould,the British Audubon,whose "Monograph of the Family of Hummingbirds" 1849-1861 has been called "a feast of beauty and source of wonder." Mark Catesby, the 18th century" Founder of American Natural History"; Alexander Wilson, the early 19th c."Founder of American Ornithology"; 18th century artist/scientists include: Thomas Pennant; Francois Martinet; George Edwards and 19th c. Prideux John Selby. Also for sale are the exquisite, exotic turn of the 18th century botanical folio etchings of Robert John Thornton's magnificent "Temple of Flora", praised as "A lasting heirloom for the British Nation". The stunningly beautiful and expansive 1834 aquatints of Priscilla Susan Bury's "A Selection of Hexandrian Plants" are here, and the best 19th c. folio Rose stipple engravings by the acclaimed Raphael of flower painters, Pierre Joseph Redoute". Redoute, painter instructor to Marie Antionette, was requested by Empress Josephine to make lasting portraits of her famous rose collection at Malmasion resulting in his magnificent "Les Roses".
